Congratulations to the Men’s 1st Team who won the Class 1 Floodlight League Final in Lansdowne on Monday 21st November.
It was an incredible night of tennis, going right down to the wire against a very strong Malahide team. Stephen made a very strong start going 3-0 up and then winning the first set in his singles match 7-5. Sean and Damon, in the doubles, took the first set 6-4 in a very closely contested set. Ronan was slower out of the blocks, going 5-0 down in the opener, but recovering to only lose it 6-3 and showing his opponent just what he was capable of. Sean and Damon were first off court with a win 6-4 6-4 and Stephen ultimately lost in the championship tie-break 10-7. It was now down to Ronan “The Sweep” Sweeney whose opponent served for the match twice in the 2nd set. Ronan hung in there and forced a 2nd set tie-break which he eventually won 11-9 having saved 3 match points. Then he had to do it all over again in the 3rd set championship tie-break. Having gone 5-1 down, it looked like it was all over for Glenageary, but we will have to rename “The Sweep” Lazarus as he came back from the dead once more, cutting the deficit to 7-5 at the changeover. Malahide then went ahead 8-5 but Ronan managed to tie it 8-8 and the crowd were going wild 😮 He saved another match point to make it 9-9 and another changeover. Match points came and went for both players and finally at 12-11 up, Ronan drilled the ball down the line and his opponent could only watch in anguish as the ball whizzed past him.
Well done guys – you did Glenageary proud 👏👏👏

Don’t forget to support the ladies 1st team who are playing in the Class 2 floodlight league final tonight, Tuesday 22nd November, in Charleville tennis club at 7pm. By winning the semi-final in a very close match against Sandycove, this team has already been promoted to Class 1 for the first time since 2011.
