Club Championships 2020

We are delighted to confirm that even with Covid-19 impacting so many us in so many ways we will be holding the GLTC Club Championships this year from w/c August 24th until Saturday 5th September.

Before reading further, please remember that Covid-19 protocols will still be in place and we would like to particularly remind members that if they have recently returned from a country that is not on Ireland’s green list, then they cannot enter the Club Championships unless their 14-day quarantine period has been completed before August 24th. In addition, although government guidelines allow up to 200 people outdoors, it may be difficult to enable adequate social distancing, so we are asking spectators to wear a mask if social distancing cannot be maintained.

As Captains, we have met and discussed what has worked in previous years and where we see room for improvement. Based on this we have decided as a trial to do things a bit differently this year. Our aim is to encourage everyone to participate in the actual championship competition and give everyone the chance to have a shot at taking down some of the ‘big guns’. We appreciate that this might be a big ask for many players so there will be more seeds than usual in each draw and all first-round losers will automatically be entered into a Plate competition.

We also plan on running a Shield competition, format still being worked on, for those that lose one of their first 2 matches, so everyone who enters would be guaranteed at least 3 matches.

As well as the Championships there will also be three Veteran’s events – ladies doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles. To be eligible, players must be over 60 (as of 1st January 2020) and of Class 7 or non-league standard.

The Championship finals will be held on Saturday 5th September, with the Mixed and most of the Plate finals held on the evening of Friday 4th September. The Championships will start in w/c 24th August but the start date will depend on the number of entries.

To encourage participation the cost is €5 euro per event or €10 to enter 2 or 3 events. Entries will close on Wednesday 19th August at 6pm. This is earlier than in previous years as there will be more work in scheduling the first round of matches so please make sure you don’t miss the deadline.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 does impact on our ability to run the At Home and so this year it will not be taking place. Prizegiving for all the winners will be held outdoors at the conclusion of each final session - fingers crossed for good weather 🤞🏻 We would encourage as many spectators as possible and it will be a BYOS – BYOB (Bring your own Seat – Bring your own Booze) event. It is hoped we might be able to run a BBQ on Saturday afternoon but that depends on Covid-19 status and weather.

During last years championship we were able to run a successful bar, thanks very much to all the volunteers who helped out, but as with the At Home that won’t be happening. Instead it will be the same BYOS – BYOB format.

We appreciate that this is quite a change from what you might be used to but we encourage everyone to give it a go and will be looking for feedback after the championships about what we should do in 2021.

Yours in Tennis
